GTA 6 Scalpers Are Listing an $80 Game for Up to $225 on eBay, and Some Buyers Are Paying It

Pre-orders for GTA 6 opened on June 25, and scalpers were on eBay within hours. Listings for both the standard and higher-tier editions have appeared at prices ranging from around $90 to as high as $225, all for a game that remains fully available at retail price through Amazon, Best Buy, and Target right now.

What makes this particular scalping wave unusual is not the markup. It is that there is no scarcity to exploit. GTA 6 is a digital-only release, meaning Rockstar Games can meet unlimited demand without a single physical unit running short. And yet, some buyers are paying anyway.

What Is Actually Being Sold

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at a standard retail price of $79.99. Rockstar has confirmed the game will not ship on disc, either at launch or in the months that follow.

For buyers who want something physical, retailers are offering a box that contains a download code and nothing else. No disc, no physical media of any kind. The code inside unlocks the same digital game available directly from the PlayStation Store or Xbox storefront.

That means both things being scalped on eBay, the digital pre-order and the code-in-box edition, are functionally identical to what any buyer can access today at full retail price from a major retailer. Some eBay sellers are even advertising the digital listings as a convenience, noting that buyers will not need to pay shipping. They are not mentioning that buyers also would not need to pay a $145 markup if they simply purchased directly.

Why There Is No Reason to Pay More

The scalper playbook works when supply is genuinely constrained. A limited console run, a pressed disc with a production ceiling, a region-exclusive physical release: these create real scarcity that can push secondary market prices above retail. None of those conditions applies here.

Because GTA 6 is fully digital, Rockstar’s ability to fulfil demand is effectively unlimited. Digital storefronts do not run out of stock. The code-in-box physical edition is similarly well-stocked, with Amazon, Best Buy, and Target all showing availability at the time of writing.

No version of this game will sell out. There is no anticipated shortage. There is no edition being produced in limited quantities. A buyer paying $225 on eBay for something available at $79.99 with two clicks from a major retailer is not beating scarcity. They are paying a premium for no material benefit.

Why Some Buyers Are Still Paying It

The more interesting question is not why scalpers are listing GTA 6 above retail. Scalpers will test any market. The question is why completed sales are being recorded at all.

Two factors explain most of it.

FOMO and misinformation. GTA 6 is the most anticipated game release in over a decade, with the franchise’s last mainline entry arriving in 2013. The emotional urgency surrounding the launch is real, even if the supply constraint is not. Some buyers, unfamiliar with the digital-only structure or operating on incomplete information, may genuinely believe that securing a copy now at any price is necessary. It is not.

Habitual behaviour. Scalper markets have conditioned a subset of buyers to treat eBay as the default secondary market for high-demand releases. For a PlayStation 5 at launch or a limited-edition peripheral, that instinct had a rational basis. Applied to a digital game with an unlimited supply, it does not, but the behaviour persists regardless.

What to Know Before You Pre-Order

For anyone planning to buy GTA 6, the facts are straightforward:

  • The standard edition retails at $79.99 and is available to pre-order directly from the PlayStation Store, Xbox storefront, Rockstar’s own platform, Amazon, Best Buy, and Target.
  • There is no disc version of GTA 6 and no plans for one. Reports or social media posts claiming otherwise are inaccurate, according to Rockstar.
  • Physical copies sold at retail contain a download code only. Buyers paying scalper prices for the physical box are paying extra for cardboard.
  • Digital pre-orders require no shipping and guarantee access on launch day, regardless of where you are.
  • GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

There is no strategic reason to pay above retail for this game at any point between now and launch. If stock at major retailers runs thin, digital storefronts will remain available without limit.
